Cullinan Ivanov Partnership were one of five shortlisted practices in the international competition for the design and documentation of the Gunyama Park + Aquatic Centre in Green Square. We were then invited to a second stage of the competition, which required a very detailed design and cost documentation.
These are some of the jury’s comments about our entry:
- The jury finds the urban design approach of this scheme to be a convincing one.
- The jury is impressed with the arrival sequence and arrival point at the centre of the aquatic centre building.
- The jury noted the northern orientation of the pools maximise sun to these areas.
- The landscaping exploration is good, with ideas of rain-gardens, swales and play-park.
The brief was a very complex set of relationships between park and aquatic centre, between paying customers and general public, and we sought to resolve this by way of level changes rather than walls or fences. Our design was informed by the industrial heritage of the surrounding area and our modernist aesthetic.
